Diaspora Affair’s Director in charge of the Skills and Expertise Division, Ms. Irene Karari, met with Ms. Imee L. Cambronero, MPH, Chief of Staff to Commissioner Cunningham at the Minnesota Department of Health, to discuss collaborative opportunities in healthcare labor mobility and workforce development.
The talks focused on leveraging Kenya’s strong healthcare workforce and education infrastructure to help address Minnesota’s critical staffing shortages, especially in rural areas and long-term care facilities. Kenya’s healthcare training sector is notably robust, with the Kenya Medical Training College operating 71 campuses across 43 counties.
Key challenges discussed included delays in EB-3 visa processing and the need for recognition frameworks that would allow Kenyan Certified Nursing Assistants to practice in Minnesota.
Representative Huldah Momanyi-Hiltsley highlighted that Minnesota hosts the second-largest Kenyan diaspora community in the U.S., which provides vital support and has made significant contributions in healthcare, technology, and political engagement.
A major outcome of the meeting was the planning of a comprehensive trade mission to Kenya in January 2026. This mission will prioritize stakeholder-driven objectives and foster direct engagement between Minnesota healthcare systems and Kenyan training institutions, enabling both parties to assess workforce capabilities and training standards in person. #KaziMajuu #SkillsTransfer
