Saturday, September 6, 2025(JOMVU, MOMBASA)__The State Department for Diaspora Affairs culminated its highly successful Mombasa County outreach initiative with a pivotal sensitization forum at the Kajembe High School.
This final session marked the conclusion of a comprehensive series aimed at empowering communities with critical knowledge on safe international labour migration.
The event served as a vital convergence point for Jomvu's key influencers and citizens. A diverse audience of community elders, religious leaders, National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), vibrant youth groups, and local opinion leaders gathered for a robust dialogue on pressing transnational issues.
Leading the delegation from the State Department was Ms. Emma Gicheha, Director of Welfare and Rights, who represented Principal Secretary Roseline K. Njogu. Under Ms. Gicheha's guidance, the team detailed the government's commitment to creating secure and prosperous pathways for Kenyans seeking opportunities abroad.
A central focus of the forum was the government's Global Labour Market Strategy (GLMS), a framework for Kenyans to access kazi majuu. The team outlined the legal and procedural steps citizens must follow to secure employment overseas safely, moving the conversation beyond informal networks and towards structured, clear channels.
In a crucial segment dedicated to public safety, experts from the Welfare and Rights Division equipped attendees with the knowledge to identify and avoid the dangers of human trafficking. They "unpacked" the common red flags and deceptive practices used by traffickers, arming the community with essential tools for vigilance and prevention.
The forum was interactive, featuring an engaged question-and-answer session where residents posed specific queries about overseas jobs, which were addressed on the spot by the present officials. Adding a direct layer of support, the team also conducted an on-site consular clinic, providing personalized assistance to families facing challenges with their kin living and working in the diaspora.
This outreach initiative by the State Department for Diaspora Affairs underscores a proactive shift towards community-led education, ensuring that Kenyans at the grassroots level are the primary beneficiaries of safe, legal, and dignified international labour mobility.
